Not every student jumps straight into working life after graduating. Some want to gather new insights, while others don't quite know yet where they're headed. That makes international experience after college not such a bad idea. What options are there?

Volunteer service

International experience after college

Volunteer service is a good alternative to starting a career right after college, because you have the chance to learn a lot.
You go to other countries to support charitable and social organizations.
This can take many forms. For example:

  • a nature conservation project
  • a soup kitchen for people in need
  • helping out at an animal sanctuary

There are other options as well. In any case, you can build contacts with locals from other countries and improve your language skills too. Many companies value your willingness to take part, so you come across much better. If you're between 17 and 30, you may even receive financial support for volunteer work. That way you can travel around the country alongside your work and see all kinds of things.

On the road as a digital nomad

You can also spend your international experience after college on your own, working abroad as a kind of digital nomad.
Many freelance jobs are suitable for this, such as travel blogger, copywriter, photographer or programmer.
So you have the choice here and need little more than an internet connection and a camera. That makes it not really expensive.
You can even work as an Amazon seller from anywhere, so you can see all sorts of places.
That makes international experience after college possible too, and you earn money completely independent of location.

Expat abroad - a somewhat different alternative

You also don't have to travel off on your own to get a job abroad. You can just as well work for an internationally oriented company. It sends you abroad as a specialist, and the fun can begin. Beforehand, though, you should shine with a very good degree to even be accepted.
That includes not only good final grades but also various internships that show your experience. Foreign language skills are an advantage too, since you'll be transferred to another country where you have to find your way around.
As an expat, in this career you're sent abroad for several months or several years, where you can really make the most of your time. It's not all work, because you also get the chance to discover a new country. International experience after college can be exciting and still moves you a step forward.
