Traveling and working abroad sounds like a dream at first. But it really is possible. With casual jobs you earn the money for your stay and can explore an entire country.
Everything can be tailored to your individual needs.
The jobs can include simple manual work, waiting tables or working on a farm. You can organize all of this on your own or get help from an organization that specializes in the program.

The Requirements for Traveling and Working Abroad

Traveling and working abroad

To be able to start the trip, there are also a few things you need to keep in mind. You should therefore meet the following requirements:

  • Of legal age
  • Within the age limit of 18-35 years
  • Solid financial reserves (proof of funds, such as a letter of credit)
  • No criminal record (police clearance certificate)
  • Valid flight ticket
  • Ability to pay for your own return flight
  • Vaccinations, if required
  • No contagious diseases

If you meet all of these, you shouldn't have to worry about this side of things anymore. It's best to open a separate account before you travel and work abroad. You can set aside part of your savings there every month. That way you'll always have something to fall back on.

Where Do You Actually Want to Go?

If you plan to rely on one of the specialized organizations or you need a visa, think carefully about where you actually want to go. Every country has very different requirements in this regard. You should also think about costs, culture, climate, distance and the kind of job you want. In more distant countries a trip like this is much more expensive, and the seasons may be the opposite of what you're used to.

The type of work can also vary from country to country. If you were to travel to Australia, for example, you could expect a lot of farm work. Traveling and working abroad is therefore not as easy as it sounds. You need to have made a clear plan beforehand. After all, you shouldn't take a job without any idea of what to expect, only to find out you don't like it at all.

When and for How Long Do You Want to Go Away?

When would you most like to go abroad? Of course, the best time is right after high school or during college. It's also possible to take a sabbatical year. That means your employer voluntarily gives you a year off work.
You should also think about how long you want to stay. Often you can apply for a Working Holiday visa. It is valid for 12 months. However, in most cases you can only use this option once per country.

You can also combine countries and end up with 24 months of visa time in total. That's really worth it. There are also visas that require a stay of at least two months. Apart from these rules, we recommend half a year, since that gives you time to see everything at your own pace.
