Working on vacation pay - earning money on vacation in Austria
My friend Vroni lives in Vienna. I love Vienna and often spend a weekend with her. The flight to Vienna isn't expensive, and with the shuttle bus I'm in the heart of the city center in about 15 minutes and can walk to her apartment. She lives centrally and has a lovely 3-room apartment there.

Three months ago I inherited a sizable six-figure sum from a great-aunt. My office job was getting on my nerves enormously, and on the spur of the moment I quit. A year off - a year of vacation.
Since I love Austria so much, I decided to vacation in this country at different places for a year. Naturally including at my friend Vroni's. How much can I earn? I've gotten an idea of that, and for me it's settled that I want to work in the restaurant and hospitality business. Vienna is full of ice cream parlors. A phenomenon, and that's exactly where I want to apply. Working on vacation pay plays a secondary role for me. It's about having fun and getting to know the beautiful country and its people better.
Working on Vacation Pay - The Differences Are Clearly Noticeable by Region
You can earn more in Vienna and in the tourist hotspots. Above all, tips come more easily. Vroni knows the industry, since she worked a lot in restaurants and bars during her studies. Working on vacation pay was therefore always a topic for her. For her it wasn't about vacation, though, but about topping up her bank account. But I benefit from her experience and gladly take her advice.
I went around to various ice cream parlors with her and managed to land a position for six weeks, and in peak season at that. Right in the middle of Vienna, I now had my job. I'm on vacation and can work. I limited my job to four days a week, since I also want to have vacation for the rest of the time. On the other three days I can explore the city, and I also want to spend a lot of time at the local water ski facility, since that's my favorite summer hobby.
Fields where side-job workers are wanted:
- Restaurants and hospitality
- Sports activities (especially skiing, water skiing or hiking)
- and more
Working on Vacation Pay and the Other Provinces in Austria
For the rest of my time off, I have mainly planned on the provinces of Carinthia and Styria. I'll pick out a few nice towns, both to vacation there and to work. I got along very well with four days a week, and with the vacation pay too.
This time, though, I'll have accommodation costs. I invited Vroni to dinner again and again and also bought her something nice at a perfumery. We split the cost of living during that time.
Now it's all about new experiences!
